How we make our puzzles
Every puzzle is carefully curated and personally tested before it goes to print. This is what goes into each page.
Each puzzle starts with a list built around one clear theme: real places, real dishes, real traditions, not generic filler. Every word is checked for spelling, meaning and fit with the theme, and kept family-friendly. Brand names and abbreviations are left out.
Our grids are built with our own puzzle software, which places words in all eight directions and spreads them evenly across the page, so no two puzzles feel the same.
The leftover letters are never random. Each hidden phrase is chosen for its page and ties back to that page's theme, as a small reward for finishing the puzzle.
Every grid is run through verification software that confirms each word on the list can be found and that the hidden phrase reads correctly. Then every page is tested by hand before the book is published.
Each puzzle comes with a short fact about its theme, and in Food & Cooking sometimes a handy cooking tip, so you learn a little more with every page you solve.
How it works
The same guide you'll find at the start of every book.
Every puzzle is built around a theme. Find every word from the word list hidden in the letter grid, then use the letters that are left to reveal a hidden phrase connected to that page's theme.
Words run in a straight, unbroken line. They never bend, skip letters or curve. Circle them, underline them, or draw a line from the first letter to the last.
Tip: some words share a starting letter and branch off in different directions, and some words are the start of a longer one. Check the word list to see exactly how far each word goes.
Words may run horizontally, vertically or diagonally, forwards or backwards: eight possible directions in total. One puzzle can use all of them.
The word list shows each entry the way it's normally written. In the grid, spaces, hyphens, apostrophes and accents are removed, so every word is one unbroken run of plain letters.
| Word list | In the grid |
|---|---|
| Amuse-bouche | AMUSEBOUCHE |
| Sauté pan | SAUTEPAN |
| Chef's knife | CHEFSKNIFE |
Every puzzle hides something extra. Once you've found and crossed off every word, a handful of letters stay untouched. Read them in order, left to right and top to bottom, and write each one into the row of boxes below the word list to spell out the hidden phrase.
Solutions for every puzzle are at the back of the book, organized by page number. Each shows the completed grid with every word marked and the hidden phrase revealed, so you can check your work or peek if you get stuck.
